Beijing's Rising Cyber Threat to US Infrastructure: A Warning from CISA's Director

Jun 16, 2023

Delve into the alarming insights shared by Jen Easterly, Director of CISA, on the increasing threat Beijing's hackers pose to US critical infrastructure.

In a recent address at the Aspen Institute, Jen Easterly, Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), threw a spotlight on Beijing's escalating investments aimed at sabotaging US critical infrastructure. Her words serve as a potent reminder of the very real and pressing threats we face today in the realm of cybersecurity.

Easterly emphasized the urgent need for robust preparation and resilience-building to counteract these growing threats. According to her, Beijing's hackers have the potential to not only breach defenses but also cause physical damage. She issued a stark warning, stressing that preventing such disruptions will be an immense challenge, given the resources and expertise that China commits to these operations.

As of now, the Chinese Embassy in Washington has not responded to these assertions.

Easterly's remarks add to the ongoing concerns about Volt Typhoon, a suspected Chinese hacking group. US intelligence assessments have previously highlighted the group's strategic positioning for destructive cyberattacks during conflicts.

The cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve into an intense battlefield. As we navigate these shifting threats, it's imperative to stay alert, strengthening our defenses to meet the challenges ahead.
